Scarecrows for Solutions

It is with great difficulty that the Scarecrow from Baum's, Wizard of Oz comes to understand that he is capable of more than he realizes.
It is with great difficulty that the Scarecrow from Baum's, Wizard of Oz comes to understand that he is capable of more than he realizes. Since the publication of Baum's "fantasy" story in 1900, the Scarecrow, for many, has been synonymous with the human desire to believe that each of us has the capacity to shine and make a difference. It is for this reason, that Bemis Farms Nursery in Spencer, MA hosts an event called Scarecrows for Solutions, which engages “innocent bystanders” in acts of good will, despite their disbelief that this fun activity could be helping others.
This past Sunday, a group of 23 Eagle Hill students and staff participated in the event: crafting unique life-sized scarecrows with hay, old clothes, fabric, markers, and a spirit of community and altruism tucked in for good measure; laughing with friends; and taking “selflies” with their new Frankenstein creations. The students paid $15 for the materials, some snacks and cider, and a pumpkin or plant to take home, and Bemis Farms donated all of that money back to the charitable organization of the students' choice. Our amazing group of students was able to donate over $300 to the Hardwick Food Pantry. Without fully realizing their capabilities, their participation has made it possible for families to share a meal, and to avoid going hungry, for at least one night, here in our own community. Even if they don't yet realize how much of a difference they have made, some day, after overcoming obstacles, and traveling down life's yellow-brick-roads, our students will look upon the people they have become, and realize they had the power to be important to others all the while.
This event at Eagle Hill is one of many that allow students to “awaken” knowledge of their strong character, and of their important role in the community and in the world. Families will have the opportunity to meet these scarecrow creations during Parents’ Weekend.
